Amy was born January 20 2007 at 3:50 p.m. Her due date was Jan 16, but Mommy kept asking her to wait until the 20th. So like a good little girl, she did.

On Friday the 19th at about 9 p.m. Angela’s water broke. We called the hospital and they said to come right in. We got there about an hour later, checked in and waited for a room.

After a short while, we were taken to room 465 and a doctor came in to check Angela.

Her prognosis -dilation is 2.5 centimeters it’ll be another 24-48 hours, at least, before birth. She told us she could give Angela something to help speed up the process if we wanted. It was safe and there was nothing to worry about. We agreed to do it.

The nurse said it would still be closer to 24 hours before anything happened, so armed with that info, the fact that Angela looked fairly comfortable in her bed and the only thing for me to sleep on was an angry looking under-stuffed leather chair in the corner, I decided to go home. So off I went.

The next morning I got up, dressed, had some coffee, had some more coffee, stopped at Starbucks on the way for more coffee, rushed to the hospital.

When I got there they said Angela was at 4 cm. and it’s possible it could happen today. Not likely, but possible.

We talked about the epidural and since Angela hadn’t slept all night and she had a long way to go they suggested her getting it now to help her relax.

We agreed and they called for the anesthesiologist.

At noon the nurse came in and checked her and announced 8 cm!  Were going to start pushing soon.

At 3:oo it was time. She said that it would take about an hour. An hour I thought, this is going to take forever.

Right on cue, her next contraction came.

With each push there was more progress. The baby started getting closer and closer. Then the Doctor came in and set up shop. Good thing too. The next contraction the baby’s head came all the way out and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.

He said it was too tight and told Angela not to push anymore. He had to cut it. Sorry Dad. I didn’t mind, I’m just glad he was there.

One more contraction and one more push and...

Our beautiful happy healthy baby came into the world. Now I know what everyone was talking about.

I cried.
